BIRTHPLACE OF THE SANKIRTANA MOVEMENT
ABOUT THIS SITE
Srivasa Angan is the courtyard of Srivasa Thakura where, 500 years ago, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu performed the all-night kirtan sessions that launched the worldwide Sankirtana movement. These ecstatic evening gatherings were the crucible in which the practice of congregational chanting of the holy names took its definitive form.
Night after night, the Lord and His intimate associates would gather in this courtyard and chant and dance in divine ecstasy until dawn. These sessions were restricted to only the most sincere devotees, and even the great sage Narada Muni is said to have observed from above, marveling at the transcendental spectacle.
Today, the courtyard has been preserved and beautified as a place for pilgrims to sit, chant, and absorb the residual spiritual potency of those ancient evenings of divine ecstasy.
